Training and Mentoring

Throughout the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine we know that mentoring maximizes the department’s vision of expanding the possibilities of health. Through the programs listed below, the department is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge and skillset of its faculty, staff, and other university employees. These programs create an opportunity, an atmosphere, and a community where individuals are able to learn, grow, and enhance their work and networks.

The National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) is a nationwide consortium of biomedical professionals and institutions collaborating to provide all trainees across the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences with evidence-based mentorship and professional development programming.

U-HELM - Opportunity for Junior Faculty Members and Postdocs at the University of Utah. U-HELM will focus on some of the challenges that trainees and faculty from minority and underserved groups as well those health equity researchers may face.

The Utah Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (Utah StARR) is designed to prepare outstanding residents for a career in academic medicine and clinical investigation by providing them with opportunities to learn and practice clinical, transitional, health service and community-engaged research skills during their residency training.

The purpose of REACH U2 is to provide undergraduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in North Carolina with an intensive ten-week summer research experience under the mentorship of a University of Utah faculty member, with the goal of preparing participants for enrolling in competitive graduate programs.

The research mentor training is a one day, eight-hour process-based training designed to help research mentors maximize the effectiveness of their mentoring relationships by providing mentors with an intellectual framework, an opportunity to experiment with various methods, and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of peers.

The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine is pleased to offer an opportunity for early stage investigators in the department to join a mentoring program. The program components include mentoring, networking, and professional development.
