Paul D. Clayton graduated from the University of Utah and then received his doctorate in Physics from the University of Arizona. He began work on an academic track at LDS Hospital and the U of U in 1972 under the tutelage of Homer Warner, Reed Gardner, and Allan Pryor. In 1987, he became a Professor at Columbia University where, based on the example at Utah, he initiated the creation of a Department of Biomedical Informatics. He returned to Utah in 1998 and retired in 2005. He served as president of the American Medical Informatics Association and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine as well as Emeritus Professor at the U of U and Columbia. His greatest professional pleasure derived from working one-on-one with the exceptional graduate students at both Institutions and thereby developing applications that were actually used to improve clinical care.
