Academic Bio

Leon Pahler, PhD, MPH, CAIH is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of Utah with industrial hygiene teaching and research responsibilities. He has a master’s degree in Organic chemistry, a Ph.D. in Organic and Heterocyclic Chemistry, and a master’s degree in Public Health with an emphasis in industrial hygiene. Dr. Pahler is the Director of the Hazardous Substance Academic Training (HSAT) Program at the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (RMCOEH) Education Research Center (ERC). Prior experience includes a three year faculty-post doctorate at the Oklahoma State University where he taught organic chemistry and conducted research and eighteen years as a Senior Environmental Specialist with Union Oil of California (UNOCAL) at the Parachute Creek Shale Oil Facility in Parachute, Colorado. Dr. Pahler currently teaches the Hazardous Substance Management course, the Advanced Industrial Hygiene course, the Noise and other Physical Agents course, and the Occupational Health and Solutions course. Dr. Pahler’s research is primarily in the industrial hygiene area with an emphasis in occupational and environmental applications. Current projects include the dissolution of metals contained in mine ores and selected metals in simulated lung fluids; correlation of real-time aerosol instrument particulate results with simultaneously collected standard method measurement results for diesel particulate matter, hexavalent chromium, silica, and metals contained in particulates; investigation of occupational particulate concentrations in the workplace using real-time aerosol instruments; and personnel and area noise level investigations in the workplace.
