Academic Bio

Dr. Hawryluk specializes in Complex Spinal Surgery, General Neurosurgery, Neurocritical Care as well as Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injury. Dr. Hawryluk also serves as the Director of Neurotrauma at University of Utah Healthcare and has extensive expertise in advanced neuromonitoring techniques. He completed his medical schooling at the University of Alberta, Canada where he was on the Dean's Honor roll and awarded a Medical Students' Association Involvement Award for his medical school volunteerism. Dr. Hawryluk completed his neurosurgery residency training at the University of Toronto, Canada and is Board Certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Neurosurgery. He completed subspecialty training at the University of California, San Francisco. He also completed a basic science Ph.D. in neural repair and regeneration, exploring the mechanism by which transplanted neural precursor cells augment recovery from spinal cord injury.

Dr. Hawryluk runs a molecular biology research laboratory at the University of Utah and has a strong background in clinical research. He contributes to medical academics at the highest level and is involved in writing both brain and spinal cord injury guidelines that set the world-wide standard for the management of neurotrauma patients. He also serves on the Guidelines Committee of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Hawryluk has been neurotrauma faculty at national and international neurosurgery meetings since he was a mid-level neurosurgical trainee.
