General Internal Medicine Welcomes New Hospitalist Team Members

University of Utah Division of General Internal Medicine welcomes new Hospitalist team members:  Prashanth Fenn MD, Laura Garcia Godoy MD, Sarah Hourston MD, Jorge Martinez MD, Zach Rubnitz MD, Luke Spady MD, & Laxmi Upadhyay MD.

Prashanth Fenn, MD

Prashanth Fenn, MD, is a newly hired Family Medicine Hospitalist at the University of Utah. Originally from upstate NY, Prashanth then completed a majority of his training at the University of Virginia (BS, MD). He moved to Salt Lake City to complete his Family Medicine training at the University of Utah in 2025. His interests include exploring National Parks, skiing, movies/TV, board games, and connecting with his local community - along with his wife, Laura.

Laura Garcia Godoy, MD

Laura Garcia Godoy, MD, was born in Colombia and grew up mostly in Philadelphia. After college, she made the move to the PNW for medical school at OHSU and followed the call from the Mountain West to complete a Med-Peds residency at the University of Utah. She is thrilled to be joining this hospitalist group and hopes to get involved in MedEd and QI. Outside of work, Laura is a big reader, a (very) beginner snowboarder, a casual runner, and a fan of the arts.

Sarah Hourston, MD

Sarah Hourston, MD, is originally from Oregon. She completed medical school and family medicine residency at the University of Utah. Prior to that, she earned her doctorate in naturopathic medicine and a masters in integrative medicine research at the National University of Natural Medicine. She completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University. She enjoys practicing patient-centered care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Sarah's research interests include nutrition, integrative medicine, developmental disabilities, and women's health. In her free time, she likes hiking, canyoneering, climbing, reading, and baking.

Jorge Martinez, MD

Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Hospice & Palliative Medicine, Jorge Martinez, MD, is a Dominican Republic-born physician with a strong foundation in interdisciplinary care, serious illness communication and symptom management. After earning his MD from Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in Santo Domingo, he completed his residency at  Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Jorge currently serves as a Nocturnist and Medical Director of the Palliative Care Service at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana, where he also is an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. His academic interests include clinical reasoning, faculty development, learner assessment, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS). Jorge brings a bilingual (English and Spanish, multicultural approach to patient care and education. Outside of medicine, he loves animals and enjoys traveling, hiking, snowboarding, cooking, photography, and yoga.

Zach Rubnitz, MD

Zach Rubnitz, MD, was raised in Memphis, TN and went to medical school at the University of Tennessee HSC. He just completed his wonderful training here at the University of Utah. He is thrilled to be joining the Hospitalist group and staying in Salt Lake City. Zach is still figuring out his career goals, but so far has developed interests in caring for patients with cancer, as well as antimicrobial stewardship. Outside of work, Zach takes advantage of the outdoor hobbies Salt Lake City has to offer - namely, backcountry skiing, but also mountain biking and camping.

Luke Spady, MD

Luke Spady, MD, is originally from Dallas, Texas. He completed medical school at Loma Linda University then internal medicine/pediatrics residency at UCSD. His main hobbies center around sports - he loves basketball, spikeball, sand volleyball, and really most any sport. Luke also enjoys the outdoors, including hiking, and is excited to get to experience the great outdoors in the Salt Lake City area. He is interested in medical education, and is super excited to be joining the team in Utah and meeting everyone in General Internal Medicine!

Laxmi Upadhyay, MD

Laxmi Upadhyay, MD, is from Nepal, where she grew up among the hills and mountains - so she naturally loves being around them. She loves outdoor activities like hiking, camping, trekking, and is excited to learn skiing and snowboarding. She is also an avid reader, and reading both fiction and nonfiction books is a favorite pastime. Laxmi is also passionate about traveling and learning history, culture, and lifestyle. She has two little kids, aged 3 and 5, and they also love doing outdoor activities - they are always outside trying to explore nature. Laxmi did her medical training at Montefiore New  Rochelle, NY, and worked as a faculty member in the Department of Internal Medicine at West Virginia University before moving to Utah. She is interested in  conducting and participating in clinical research, particularly in the fields of hematology and oncology.
