The University of Utah's Division of General Internal Medicine is excited to announce a recent publication stemming from the research of James Willey, MD, and his co-authors in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine:

Veterans' views on alcohol use and experience of alcohol withdrawal syndrome treatment and subsequent alcohol use disorder care at two highly rural-serving VA hospitals: a qualitative study.

Dr. Willey et al focused using a qualitative approach to uncover the veteran perspective on Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). "Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant cause of morbidity that disproportionately affects veterans and rural-serving hospitals" the article states. The researchers used semi-structured interviews of veterans with AUD who had recent admissions to rural-serving hospitals, and their:

"findings suggest that a non-judgmental treatment environment and improved access to specialized services are essential to receiving effective AUD treatment, particularly for veterans in rural areas who have been repeatedly admitted for AWS."

Congratulations to the research team!

James Willey
