Behind every major discovery, new therapy, and improvement in patient care is a sustained commitment to asking important questions and securing the resources needed to answer them. This year, the University of Utah Department of Internal Medicine proudly recognizes a distinguished group of faculty whose work exemplifies that commitment at the highest level.
Over three consecutive fiscal years, from 2023 through 2025, these investigators, serving as account executives, each exceeded $1 million in annual external research expenditures. Sustaining this level of competitive funding across multiple years is a rare and significant accomplishment. It reflects not only scientific rigor, but also leadership, collaboration, strategic vision, and the ability to build and maintain high-performing research programs.
Their work spans clinical innovation, population health, precision medicine, health services research, and translational science. Collectively, these efforts strengthen the Department’s research enterprise, attract talented trainees and collaborators, and translate discovery into better patient care in Utah and beyond.
“Sustained research funding is far more than a numerical benchmark; it reflects our collective curiosity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to addressing the most complex challenges in human health,” said Alfred Cheung, MD, Vice Chair for Research. “Each grant awarded represents scientific rigor, innovation, and a meaningful partnership with our trainees, collaborators, and the patients who inspire us to advance discovery.”
Dr. Cheung added, “The accomplishments of these investigators exemplify what distinguishes the University of Utah’s Department of Internal Medicine: superb faculty, a vibrant research community, and a shared dedication to translating discovery into meaningful improvements in health care. We are deeply grateful for their contributions to their laboratories, our Department’s mission, the University’s expanding research enterprise, and the broader society we serve.”
The Department of Internal Medicine celebrates these investigators not only for the scale and consistency of their funding success, but for the enduring contributions their research makes to science, medicine, and the communities we serve.
