Since joining our division on January 1, 2026, Dr. Batista has quickly established himself as an outstanding scientist, valued colleague, and enthusiastic contributor to our mission. This endowed chair recognizes not only his exceptional career—which has included faculty appointments at Stanford University, Washington University in St. Louis, and now Huntsman Cancer Institute—but also the innovative research he continues to lead here at HCI.

Dr. Batista's research focuses on the intersection of telomere biology, hematopoietic development, and cancer genomics. His pioneering work on telomerase dysfunction, RNA processing pathways, and patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models has advanced our understanding of bone marrow failure syndromes and hematologic malignancies. His discoveries are helping shape new translational approaches in regenerative medicine and cancer research.

His research program is supported by multiple NIH R01 grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), in addition to a distinguished record of funding from the American Cancer Society, the V Foundation, the Department of Defense, and other prestigious organizations.

Beyond his scientific accomplishments, Dr. Batista exemplifies the collaborative spirit that defines our division. His generosity as a colleague, commitment to teamwork, and dedication to advancing our shared mission have already made a meaningful impact.
