Dr. Daniel Leung Receives Bailey K. Ashford Medal from the ASTMH
Dec 17, 2025
Daniel Leung, MD, MSc, Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, has been selected to receive the 2025 Bailey K. Ashford Medal, one of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene’s (ASTMH) highest honors recognizing distinguished work in tropical medicine by an early- or mid-career investigator.
Dr. Leung received the medal from ASTMH President David Fidock, PhD, FASTMH, during the Society’s Annual Meeting in Toronto on Sunday, November 9. The award is named for Bailey K. Ashford, an iconic figure who, at age 26, discovered the link between hookworm infection and anemia—a foundational insight still taught across medical disciplines, including gastroenterology.
This year, four Ashford Medals were awarded to individuals whose work has significantly advanced the field of tropical medicine. Dr. Leung’s selection reflects his outstanding contributions to global infectious diseases and his growing impact on research and training in this vital area.
His recognition highlights the University of Utah’s strong presence and leadership in global health and tropical medicine.
