AHA Recognizes Dr. Jamie Dwyer for Hypertension Study

Oct 22, 2025

Jamie Dwyer, MD, Professor in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of Utah, has been selected to receive the prestigious 2025 Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award from the American Heart Association (AHA). The award recognizes the highest-scoring abstract submitted from each country to the Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2025 and highlights Dr. Dwyer's outstanding contribution to cardiovascular research on a global stage.

Dr. Dwyer's abstract, titled "Baxdrostat Lowers Blood Pressure in Patients with Uncontrolled Hypertension and Chronic Kidney Disease: Results from the FigHTN Phase 2 Trial," was the highest-scored abstract submitted to the AHA's Hypertension Scientific Sessions this year. The FigHTN Phase 2 trial evaluates the effects of baxdrostat—a selective aldosterone synthase inhibitor—on lowering blood pressure in patients with both uncontrolled hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD), a group at especially high risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

The abstract was selected for both its scientific rigor and its potential to influence clinical practice in the management of hypertension among patients with CKD. Dr. Dwyer's research continues to advance the understanding of innovative treatment strategies for complex hypertensive populations.

The Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award, named after one of the founding members of the AHA and a pioneer in preventive cardiology, is a significant recognition of international excellence in cardiovascular science.
