Nephrology & Hypertension Research Trainee Info
The Division of Nephrology & Hypertension welcomes research trainees!
Trainees include undergraduate, graduate, and medical students; internal medicine residents; and nephrology PhD and MD postdoctoral fellows.
The NIH-funded U2C-TL1 Institutional Network Award for promoting kidney, urologic & hematologic research training, ASCEND: Mountain States Advancement in Research, Supportive Networking, and Career Development, provides funding for eligible pre- and postdoctoral trainees, and networking and career development opportunities for all trainees pursuing kidney, urology, and benign hematology research at the University of Utah and the University of Colorado.
The Biomedical Research Education Office (BREO) provides support for trainees across University of Utah Health, including support for Institutional Training Grants, many of which have supported pre- and postdoctoral trainees in Nephrology labs.

Undergraduate Students
Nephrology researchers train undergraduate students from the University of Utah and elsewhere. Undergraduates interested in kidney or hypertension research should contact Nephrology researchers. In addition, Nephrology researchers participate in the following programs:
Graduate Students
Nephrology researchers train graduate students obtaining Master’s and PhD degrees. Interested students should apply to the relevant graduate programs:
Medical Students and Internal Medicine Residents
Nephrology researchers train medical students and internal medicine residents. Students and residents interested in kidney or hypertension research should contact Nephrology researchers. In addition, medical students can receive support for summer research from the NIH-funded Medical Student Research Program, in particular the NIDDK-funded program.
The University of Utah Internal Medicine Residency sponsors the Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) for internal medicine residents with a strong background and interest in research. Eligible trainees interested in this pathway should contact Dr. Rodan (aylin.rodan@hsc.utah.edu) in addition to applying to the PSTP and conventional categorial residency programs.
PhD and MD Postdoctoral Fellows
Nephrology researchers train postdoctoral fellows with PhDs or MDs (including nephrology fellows). Fellows interested in kidney or hypertension research should contact Nephrology researchers.
