Building Connection and Culture at the 2025 DOIM World Café

Oct 28, 2025

The Department of Internal Medicine hosted its annual World Café on October 9, 2025—an evening of meaningful conversation, reflection, and connection.

Hosted by April Mohanty, PhD, MPH, Vice Chair for Culture & Community, and Sonja Raaum, MD, FACP, Director for Gender & Community, and formerly known as the Women’s World Café, this year’s event welcomed all DOIM faculty, staff, trainees, and advanced practice clinicians (APCs). Through small-group discussions, participants explored topics such as thriving in uncertainty, mentorship, leadership at all levels, work-life integration, joy in medicine, and professional development.

Each discussion round encouraged open dialogue to identify barriers, share strategies, and strengthen collaboration across divisions. Participants reflected on the importance of transparency, communication, and a sense of belonging in building a culture where individuals and teams can thrive.

The evening highlighted that the department’s success depends not only on excellence in research, education, and clinical care but also on the well-being and connection of its people.

As attendees shared takeaways and ideas for continued growth, a shared theme emerged—moving forward together to foster a stronger, more supportive, and resilient community within the Department of Internal Medicine.
