Celebrating Excellence: Internal Medicine Honorees at MedExcellence 2025
Dec 04, 2025
Last month, the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine Alumni Association celebrated exceptional alumni and faculty at the 2025 MedExcellence Awards. Full details about this year’s award program can be found on the Alumni Association’s website.
Among the 2025 honorees were two outstanding members of the Department of Internal Medicine whose work continues to elevate patient care, medical education, and community wellbeing.
Juliana Simonetti, MD ’09
Associate Professor of Internal Medicine Dr. Juliana Simonetti was honored for her outstanding leadership and commitment to improving patient care. Her passion for serving underserved communities began early, shaped in part by her experience immigrating to the United States at age 15. After earning her medical degree from the University of Utah, she completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, followed by a fellowship in Obesity Medicine and Clinical Nutrition at Boston University Medical Center.
Dr. Simonetti has since become a nationally recognized voice in patient-centered obesity care. She launched the medical obesity program and co-directs the Comprehensive Weight Management Program. She also established the Obesity Medicine Fellowship at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, creating vital pathways for both patient support and clinician training. She also co-founded and co-directs PROMIS2U, a pipeline initiative designed to address physician shortages in rural and tribal communities. Through her innovative programs and mentorship, Dr. Simonetti continues to influence the future of obesity care and medical education.
Mark Sims, MD
Dr. Mark Sims, hospitalist and palliative care physician at Intermountain Medical Center and Associate Program Director at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, was honored with this year’s Community Clinician Educator Award, sponsored by CompHealth. Board-certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, he completed his training at the University of Southern California before coming to the University of Utah for a Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship in 2022.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sims serves as an Adjunct Professor who guides students through residency choices and demonstrates exemplary donor–patient communication at the bedside. Widely recognized with multiple teaching awards, he is celebrated for his dedication to clinical excellence and for inspiring the next generation of compassionate physicians.
The Department of Internal Medicine proudly celebrates Dr. Simonetti and Dr. Sims for their achievements and thanks them for their continued contributions to our community, our learners, and the patients we serve.
