About the Division of Epidemiology

The Division of Epidemiology is an academic home within the Department of Internal Medicine for faculty with methodologic expertise in:

  • Epidemiology
  • Biostatistics
  • Informatics
  • Health services research
  • Community-based participatory research

Clinical and population areas of research focus include cancer, infectious diseases, infection control, nutrition, patient safety, and genetics.

Education

The division is actively involved in the education of students from a wide variety of backgrounds, most of whom are residents, fellows, and junior faculty seeking to become independent investigators in epidemiology and health services research. This education consists of formal coursework associated with the University of Utah's MS in Clinical Investigation Program, as well as career development and training (mentorship).

The Community Engagement Core which is one of the components of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) at the University of Utah serves as an academic home for clinical and translational research, developing innovative health services for the community and health researchers. The division faculty and center are actively involved in the mentorship of fellows (through a close relationship with the Division of Infectious Diseases) and junior faculty to train a new generation of investigators through scientist awards.

Partnerships

The Division has strong affiliations with a number of partners to strengthen our impact in the community. We partner closely with Intermountain Healthcare, the Salt Lake Veterans Administration, Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Department of Biomedical Informatics, and the Study Design and Biostatistics Center.
