Dr. Daniel Clegg to Retire at the Beginning of 2021
Aug 26, 2020 1:00 PM
Dr. Daniel Clegg will be retiring from the University of Utah at the beginning of 2021 after 21 years of service as Chief for Division of Rheumatology. Though I only had the pleasure of working with Dr. Clegg for a few months since my arrival to the Department of Internal Medicine, I have appreciated his loyalty, guidance, and thoughtful approach to leadership and medicine.
There is no doubt that Dr. Clegg is a true University of Utah Ute, having completed his Bachelor's degree, medical degree, internship, residency and fellowship all at the University of Utah. He has served as Division Chief since 1999, and was appointed to the Harold J., Ardella T., and Helen T. Stevenson Presidential Chair in Rheumatology in 2003. He has led his division through numerous successes, including significant expansion of rheumatology faculty, the development of the Integrated Care Service, a program unique among rheumatology divisions nationally, and the expansion of the Rheumatology Fellowship program. Under his direction, the Division of Rheumatology has continued to be internationally recognized for its expertise in multicenter clinical trials.
Dr. Clegg’s primary research interests have been the clinical characterization of rheumatic diseases and evaluation of novel therapies. The breadth of his work includes seminal studies in rheumatoid arthritis, and spondyloarthropathies, including psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis. For his significant contributions, he has been recognized as a Master by the American College of Rheumatology.
I want to thank Dr. Clegg for his many years of service, and I wish him well on his retirement. With his unwavering loyalty to our organization, I have no doubt Dr. Clegg will keep his eye on us from afar, and anticipate the continued growth of his division. Dr. Clegg and I ask for your patience and understanding as we begin the search for his replacement; we will take our time to ensure we are selecting the best possible candidate to follow in his footsteps and lead the Division of Rheumatology in this new decade and beyond.
