Why train at the University of Utah?

I wanted a strong academic internal medicine program with University, community, and VA exposure, which initially is what put the University of Utah on my list. After interviewing here and meeting the fantastic faculty and residents, seeing the beautiful city, and getting to ski during my interview trip, I knew it was going to be a great fit.

Career Interests:

I’m planning to pursue a cardiology fellowship. Currently focusing on cardiac imaging in atrial fibrillation for my research.

Special Interests in Residency:

Most exciting project I've been working on since being in residency is contributing to one of my favorite internal medicine podcasts, CoreIM! Hopefully we'll have the episode posted in the near future with more to come down the road. Stay tuned!

Favorite SLC Activity: joel money

There are so many favorite activities in SLC for me. Skiing, climbing, hiking, trail running, going down to the 5(!) national parks nearby... it's hard to pick just one.

If I weren't a doctor, I'd be...

...either a rhythm guitarist in a mediocre metal band, or some kind of mechanical engineer.

Why train at the University of Utah?

I chose to train at University of Utah because of the people and atmosphere of the program. I felt like the residents enjoyed being at work, and that was very important to me.

Career Interests:

Currently undecided. Likely hospital medicine for the first few years, but there is a good chance I will eventually end up in outpatient primary care/concierge medicine with a focus on skin and aesthetics. I also have interests in both administration and health policy, so will likely end up incorporating that into my plans as well.

Special Interests in Residency:

I’m currently doing an aesthetic dermatology elective with the Dermatology program. Next year I plan on doing an international elective to South America.

Favorite SLC activity: nerissa d'silva

I didn’t grow up in the mountains or in snow, so although I enjoy exploring the outdoors and skiing, it’s not my favorite thing to do. With my time off you can find me checking out new restaurants, bars, outdoor concerts etc. It’s also very easy to take small weekend trips to anywhere- national parks (5!), Las Vegas, Jackson Hole, Lake Powell.... the list is endless!

If I weren't a doctor, I'd be...

Definitely an actor, and if that didn't work out, an event planner. If all that ended in failure, I'd join the family business as a coffee roaster.

Why train at the University of Utah?

All of the faculty, trainees, and staff I met during the interview were friendly and were happy to be at the University of Utah. I loved the mix of wide clinical pathology offered by such an expansive catchment area, support for pursuing research, and of course, the unparalleled access to nature. It is hard to compete with world class medicine and world class hiking or skiing within 30 minutes of each other!

Career Interests:

I intend to pursue a career in academic medicine, and am currently interested in cardiology and general internal medicine. I have a background in clinical trial design, and I hope to better leverage available data to improve risk detection and therapeutic decision-making.

Special Interests in Residency:

I am a scholar in the Utah StARR program, which is a fantastic program that provides funded protected research time to residents at the University of Utah.

Favorite SLC activity: alex z

Anything outside; there is a great group of folks in our cohort, and someone is always down to do something outside, whether that is hiking, climbing, or sitting and enjoying some of the local craft brews. One of my favorite aspects about where we are located is that you can do a casual trail walk for a few miles, or ascend over 4000ft 10 minutes from each other.

Favorite SLC restaurant:

Pretty Bird Chicken (awesome Nashville hot chicken sandwiches), Mazza (middle eastern food), and Spitz (Mediterranean street food super tasty döner kebabs). I love to eat, I could keep going…

Why train at the University of Utah?

I was drawn to UofU because of the institution’s innovative spirit and I ranked Utah #1 because of the people! It’s such an awesome feeling to come across a group and think, “I can see myself growing and learning with these people for the next 3 years.”

Career Interests:

I’m so excited to be doing a Chief year, followed by Palliative Care fellowship and combining with a career as a hospitalist. I’m also interested in Quality Improvement.

Special Interests in Residency:

I’ve had the privilege of serving on the Student Trainee Advisory Committee, which is involved in our faculty retention and promotion process. I also attended the ACP meeting in Philadelphia where I presented an awesome case for the Clinical Vignette poster competition.catey harwell

Favorite SLC restaurant:

Weekday brunch at Root’s café! It’s worth the wait on the weekends too, I’m just not that patient. For dinner, a bowl of kimchi ramen at Kobe.

If I weren’t a doctor, I’d be…

...an engineer working on R&D for a pharmaceutical company. Or (and I still haven’t given up on this yet), starting a café and bakery serving up delicious coffee, scones, and muffins.

Why train at the University of Utah?

Obvious reasons I chose the U o f U include friendly housestaff who were clearly happy, thoughtful academic programming with good educational resources and an awesome city surrounded by mountains. Things I've come to love while being here include attendings who are approachable and willing to teach, the camaraderie of co-residents who like their jobs and each other, and never having a lazy day off when there are too many fun things to do outside (and sometimes inside a brewery).

Career Plans

To be a hospitalist with a special interest in QI.

Why train at the University of Utah?

I chose Utah for the beautiful city and access to the outdoors. I chose this program for the giant family that is the house staff, fellows and faculty as well as the access to promising research opportunities at the Huntsman. There is a sense of community among the physicians here that does not occur everywhere and in residency, this makes all the difference in training and well-being.

Career Plans:

Hematology/oncology fellowship with focused interest in solid tumors/genitourinary malignancies.j esther k bryant

Special Interests and Hobbies:

We enjoy mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding at Brighton, all forms of camping, and canoeing. Kaitlyn is the ultimate dog mom. I am trying to master the backflip on a wakeboard.

Favorite SLC restaurant:

Zest, Lake Effect (good music, better cocktails), Nomad.

Why train at the University of Utah?

The faculty and residents were huge in my decision to stay in Utah - I had such a wonderful experience in Internal Medicine as a medical student here.

Career Plans:

I think I want to be an academic hospitalist, but I have also loved Infectious Diseases. I am also very interested in QI.

Special Interests in Residency: g dunn

I would like to start volunteering at the local level. I also hope to continue to be involved with a group that I helped start in medical school, called WE WILL - Women Empowering Women In Leadership. As a group of female-identifying individuals, we wanted to create a space to promote female leaders in medicine through mentorship and professional development. We hosted mentorship workshops, networking events, and started an annual conference for medical students at the U. We invited female faculty and residents to speak in small groups on such topics as self-advocacy, negotiation, taking up space, leadership styles, and work-life integration.

Favorite SLC activity:

Winter = skiing (Little Cottonwood Canyon is my area of choice). Summer = outdoor concerts at Red Butte Gardens.

Favorite SLC restaurant:

The patio at Trestle Tavern.

If I weren’t a doctor, I’d...

..run a small hotel.

Career Interests:

Primary care, with an interest in access to healthcare issues.

Special Interests in Residency:

I’ve been able to get involved in the U’s fantastic Driving Out Diabetes mobile health clinic initiative. In addition, I try to read twenty non-medicine, non-fiction books a year, and I actually met that goal both of my first two years of residency!

Why train at the University of Utah?

I liked that University of Utah was a mid-sized program that provided the opportunity to work at multiple different hospitals and challenged residents clinically while still valuing wellness and balance. Most importantly, I wanted to be at a place where the faculty and residents were smart and motivated, while still being kind, generous, and down-to-earth, and I really felt that here.

Career Interests:

I’m undecided, but interested in infectious disease fellowship. I really enjoy public health work, so would like to have some aspect of my future job rooted in that, either through research or working in the public sector.

Special Interests in Residency: e neihaus

I’d love to do a global health rotation and get involved in health advocacy in Utah.

Favorite SLC restaurant:

I still have so much to explore in this realm, but so far my favorite food eaten in SLC is from a $1 taco truck: Tacos Don Rafa.

If I weren’t a doctor, I’d be…

...an academic epidemiologist, with primary emphasis on teaching.
