MD Nutrition Education
The Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine is proud to partner with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in a national effort to strengthen nutrition education in medical training. In fall 2026, we will begin incorporating a minimum of 40 hours of nutrition education (or a competency-based equivalent) into our curriculum across all four years of medical school.
Our participation is in response to an urgent public health need. Diet-related chronic disease accounts for nearly 60 percent of deaths in the United States. It also contributes to $4 trillion+ in annual health care spending. By expanding education in diet, nutrition, and metabolic health, we will prepare SFESOM graduates to prevent disease, improve health outcomes, and better support patients through evidence-based nutrition care.
Through this partnership with HHS, SFESOM will join other medical schools as part of a national movement supported by bipartisan congressional action. Together, we will further modernize medical education and ensure that nutrition plays a central role in training tomorrow’s physicians.
This is a work in progress. Stay tuned for further updates that will be posted to this landing page.
