Neuromuscular Fellowship

Overview

The Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship accepts two fellows per year for training in neuromuscular disease diagnosis and management, electrodiagnostic testing, autonomics, and nerve and muscle pathology. There is an opportunity for a pediatric-specific track.

Research

  • Fellows are supported in various clinical and translational research opportunities.
  • Fellows function as subinvestigators for clinical trial recruitment.

Education

Fellows will participate in the following:

  • Weekly collaborative didactics between attendings and fellows
  • Direct instruction from seasoned electrodiagnosticians, including technologists and physicians in an AANEM Accredited Laboratory with Exemplary Status
  • Elective time for various neuromuscular-adjacent learning opportunities or research pursuits
  • Opportunities for becoming proficient in the reading of autonomic reflex studies
  • Monthly neuropathology conference with in-person slide review with neuromuscular and neuropathology attendings and related trainees

Clinical

Fellows will be exposed to the following:

  • Outpatient exposure to broad nerve and muscle pathology, from a variety of etiologies including toxic/metabolic, autoimmune, genetic, degenerative, and nutritional
  • Inpatient neuromuscular consults and electrodiagnostic testing
  • Robust electrodiagnostic training, with specialized training in jitter analysis (aka single fiber EMG), repetitive nerve stimulation, prolonged exercise testing for periodic paralysis, sympathetic skin response, and quantitative EMG
  • A multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to ALS, which is a certified Center of Excellence by the ALS Association
  • A multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to muscular dystrophy, which is partnered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association
  • Rural outreach neuromuscular care

Application

Eligible applicants:

  • Must be a BC/BE adult or child neurologist or a PMR physician who has completed their ACGME-accredited residency training by the fellowship start date
  • Must be US citizen, permanent resident, or hold a J-1 clinical visa
