Two Distinguished Careers: Drs. Mark Bromberg and Kathleen Digre Retire from the Department of Neurology

The University of Utah Department of Neurology honors two exceptional physicians whose combined careers span more than six decades of clinical excellence, groundbreaking research, and unwavering dedication to patient care and medical education.

Mark B. Bromberg, MD, PhD, FAAN

After 30 years with the Department of Neurology, Mark B. Bromberg, MD, PhD, FAAN, has retired as Chief of the General Neurology Division and professor specializing in nerve and muscle disorders. Bromberg's commitment to expanding access to neurological care extended beyond Salt Lake City—he regularly traveled to St. John's Medical Center in Jackson, Wyoming, to provide essential general neurology services to underserved populations.

A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School with a PhD in physiology from the University of Vermont, Bromberg became internationally recognized for his expertise in ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). His passion for helping patients and families navigate this devastating disease culminated in co-authoring Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis with his wife, Diane Banks Bromberg, JD. Published by Oxford University Press as part of the AAN "Neurology Now" series, this compassionate guide provides practical, comprehensive information from two unique perspectives: a neurologist with three decades of clinical experience and a family member who personally cared for a parent with ALS.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bromberg remained dedicated to medical education and found his greatest professional joy in "always learning something or better understanding and interacting with patients as people."

Kathleen Digre, MD

Kathleen Digre, MD, retired after 34 years of practicing neuro-ophthalmology and over three decades with the University of Utah, where she served as professor of neurology and ophthalmology and Chief of the Division of Headache and Neuro-ophthalmology. Her distinguished career has been marked by exceptional contributions to clinical care, research, and advocacy for women's health and gender equality in academia.

Digre's research on neurological vision disorders, particularly photophobia, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and headache disorders in women, has advanced the field significantly. She founded the University of Utah Headache Clinic and directed the Center of Excellence in Women's Health, exemplifying her commitment to interdisciplinary care.

Beyond clinical excellence, Digre has been a tireless educator and mentor. She helped establish NOVEL (Neuro-Ophthalmology Virtual Education Library), a free open-source resource accessed over 2.5 million times annually from more than 150 countries. Her numerous honors include Distinguished Professor at the University of Utah, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Zurich, and the John R. Graham Award from the American Headache Society.

As Digre has often said, "I'm in headache medicine because I want to make people better"—a sentiment that has guided her remarkable career and inspired countless students, residents, and fellows.

The Department of Neurology celebrates the extraordinary legacies of Mark Bromberg and Kathleen Digre, whose dedication to patient care, research excellence, and medical education has profoundly shaped our institution and the broader neurology community.
