About the Adult Neurology Residency
The Adult Neurology Residency Program at the University of Utah is a comprehensive, four-year categorical program that includes a guaranteed preliminary (PGY-1) year of internal medicine training. The adult neurology residency provides each resident with a thorough grounding in neurology as a clinical discipline. Over the past ten years, our program continues to be accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) without any citations.

Flexible Program
Both residents and faculty are actively involved in developing a training program that allows residents ample flexibility to pursue their emerging interests that may lead to clinical practice in a community program or an academic career.
The first year of neurology residency training focuses on inpatient neurological care with an ambulatory 4+1 schedule. We have a well-developed nightfloat system for our University hospital, with the bulk of this time done in the PGY3 year. Subsequent years of residency training build upon the foundational knowledge of inpatient and emergent neurologic care gained in the PGY2 year. Outpatient subspecialty exposure is a constant in our program and occurs in all years of training. Every effort is made to allow for flexibility of resident training in an attempt to foster individual career goals. Our program combines an outstanding balance of inpatient and outpatient activities and instruction in both clinical neurology and its scientific basis.
Educational Excellence
Our residency program trains its physicians in the diagnosis and management of neurological disease in both the outpatient office setting and in the acute hospital wards. We educate our residents in cutting-edge research and technology through the major diagnostic modalities of electromyography, electroencephalography, neuroradiology, neuro-ophthalmology, and neuropathology. By grounding our residents’ education in clinical and basic neuroscience, we prepare them to continue growing as a neurologist throughout their career.
Our program emphasizes clinical excellence on the part of both residents and faculty. Strengths of the residency include
- an aggressive acute-stroke treatment program (Brain Attack Team),
- an expansive TeleStroke network with 30 sites,
- an emerging Teleneurology program,
- a neurocritical care unit (NCCU),
- a large patient catchment area (10% of the US land mass),
- comprehensive and multidisciplinary outpatient clinics,
- individualized instruction in both general neurology and subspecialty disciplines,
- ample opportunities for exposure to clinical or basic research, and
- close working relations between faculty and residents.
Instruction is supplemented by faculty from other departments, such as neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuro-oncology, and neuroradiology.
