Maternal Deaths Linked to Substance Use Are a Public Health Crisis
A history of substance abuse is the most common risk factor contributing to pregnancy-associated death (includes pregnancy and up to one year postpartum). Over 4 out of 10 maternal deaths had a history of substance use.
Approximately 7 in 10 pregnancy-associated deaths were preventable.
Help prevent these deaths:
-
Ask your patients about substance use. (Try the NIDA Quick Screen.)
-
Connect patients with peer support (such as USARA), prenatal care (SUPeRAD and PATH) and substance use treatment.
-
Medication for opioid use disorder saves lives. Learn about MOUD and how to use it.
-
Naloxone saves lives. Help patients with access.
