ROBERT W. METCALF, M.D. LECTURE SERIES

February 2017 marked the final Metcalf/ANNA (Arthroscopy Association of North America) meeting after 24 successful years. Robert W. Metcalf, M.D. was the driving force starting these annual meetings, creating them as much out of necessity as passion. He is known as one of the pioneers in the arthroscopy field and started giving seminars in 1977 due to high demand of doctors wanting to see his work. These seminars grew and in 1979 they switched over to an annual meeting held at Hotel Utah in downtown Salt Lake City. The Metcalf meetings became known for the latest in arthroscopic education, technology, and technique. The meetings examined modern ideas and provided a place for careers to be shaped and built.

In 2009 the Metcalf meeting combined with ANNA and became the annual Metcalf/ANNA meeting continuing until 2017. Throughout its history, 39 seminars were held with approximately 17,000 attendees. In 2013 enough funds were gathered to create an endowed chair that went to Dr. Robert Burks.

Sherman S. Coleman Graduation Seminar

Seminar History

The Sherman S. Coleman Graduation Seminar is an annual scientific meeting held by the University of Utah Department of Orthopaedics and the office of CME. The seminar honors the teaching and research legacy of Dr. Coleman and invites orthopaedic surgeons and caregivers from the Intermountain region. The graduating chief residents from the University of Utah orthopaedic program present and defend their scientific research theses and local and visiting surgeons have the opportunity to review critique and discuss their results. Distinguished visiting professors give keynote addresses and a case-based teaching session.

The seminar serves as a focal point for gathering, education and discussion for regional surgeons and University of Utah Orthopaedic Alumni. A collegial and informative meeting commemorates the spirit of Dr. Sherm Coleman.

Dunbar Sports Medicine Lecture Series

The William Dunbar, MD, Sports Medicine Lectureship was established in memory of William Dunbar, who was a resident of the University of Utah Department of Orthopedics from 1974–1979. Bill was an outstanding resident who was well respected and well liked by the entire faculty and his fellow residents. He finished his residency and entered private practice, specializing in sports in Santa Barbara, California, at a time when arthroscopy was developing. He became very involved in the world of arthroscopy and was an active contributor until his untimely death at age 42. Bill's family and friends endowed a lectureship in his memory.

Visiting professors who have participated in the lectureship include distinguished orthopedists/arthroscopists Russell Warren, MD; Frank Noyes, MD; Peter Fowler, MD; Dale Daniel, MD; Donald Shelbourne, MD; William Clancy, MD; Evan Flatow, MD; Stephen Burkhart, MD; Stephen Howell, MD; Ken Yamaguchi, MD; and Freddie Fu, MD.

Advanced Shoulder ArthroPlasty Meeting

Dr. Robert Tashjian co-directs this biennial meeting, along with Dr. Jay D. Keener and Dr. George S. Athwal. ASAP Meeting is sponsored with the help of the Department of Orthopaedics and the University of Utah CME department. Our goal and mission is to be the ultimate international shoulder arthroplasty course educating surgeons on all aspects of shoulder arthroplasty from simple to complex. We are emphasizing practicality–surgeons learning not only the theory of shoulder arthroplasty but actual surgical techniques and practical treatment algorithms through video instruction, live surgery, surgical and computer planning workshops, case presentations and faculty discussion. We present cutting‐edge information while still keeping the focus on helping to solve practical clinical problems for the shoulder arthroplasty surgeon. This 3‐day world‐class education event will be fostered by our approachable faculty, including Master Surgeons from around the globe.
