Salt Lake City, UT — The University of Utah Department of Orthopaedics is pleased to announce the appointment of Josh Rainey, MD, who will join the Adult Reconstruction Division as a Tenure Track Instructor and Orthopaedic Adult Reconstruction Surgeon. Dr. Rainey will officially join the faculty on September 8, 2026.
Dr. Rainey returns to the University of Utah after completing his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency in Salt Lake City.
He went on to complete advanced fellowship training in Complex Hip and Knee Arthroplasty at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is excited to return to the University of Utah and serve patients throughout Utah and the Mountain West.
Dr. Rainey specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery, with expertise in primary and complex joint reconstruction. His clinical interests include partial knee replacement (unicompartmental knee arthroplasty), total knee replacement, robotic-assisted knee replacement, STAR approach hip replacement, and direct anterior approach total hip replacement.
In addition to primary joint replacement, Dr. Rainey has a special interest in complex revision hip and knee replacement surgery, periprosthetic joint infections, periprosthetic fractures, complex oncologic hip and knee reconstructions, and hip abductor tendon repairs and reconstructions. He is committed to providing individualized, evidence-based surgical and nonsurgical care to help patients regain mobility, function, and quality of life.
Dr. Rainey looks forward to building strong relationships with referring providers across Utah and the Mountain West while expanding access to high-quality adult reconstruction care. He will practice at the University Orthopaedic Center, University Hospital, Holy Cross, the VAMC, and University of Utah Health Care Farmington.

His advanced training in complex hip and knee reconstruction and commitment to patient-centered care will strengthen the University of Utah’s adult reconstruction program and enhance access to comprehensive joint replacement services for patients throughout the region.
