A recent study from the laboratory of Dr. Tom Lane (Grist et al., Euro. J. Immunol., 2018) was selected as the cover article for the European Journal of Immunology. Using a unique transgenic mouse developed in the Lane laboratory, they were able to explore how sustained neutrophil infiltration into the central nervous system affected disease progression in a pre-clinical model of the human demyelinating disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Their findings clearly show that neutrophils can increase the severity of demyelination arguing for a potential role for these cells in disease progression in patients with progressive forms of MS. In addition, these findings argue that targeting neutrophil infiltration into the CNS may offer a unique therapeutic option for treatment of this form of MS.
