Department offices, facilities and full-time faculty are located in University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Intermountain Medical Center, Primary Children’s Hospital, State Medical Examiner’s Office, and ARUP Laboratories, Inc. With a combined bed capacity of 1,380, these institutions generate approximately 200 autopsies, 94,700 surgical procedures, and 25 million clinical laboratory procedures each year.

UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HOSPITAL / HUNTSMAN CANCER INSTITUTE
Situated in the foothills above Salt Lake City, the University of Utah Hospital provides tertiary medical services for Utah and the geographically vast Mountain West, which includes portions of Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. The Huntsman Cancer Institute provides inpatient and outpatient care for all types of adult cancers, as well as genetics-focused cancer research. The autopsy, transfusion service and clinical laboratory divisions are located at University Hospital. The surgical pathology division, including a state of the art gross room, is located at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Also at the University Hospital is the resident’s room with a library, computer terminals, study areas, and microscopes.
ARUP LABORATORIES, INC.
ARUP Laboratories is a national reference laboratory and a worldwide leader in innovative laboratory research and development. Owned by the University of Utah, ARUP offers an extensive test menu of >3000 tests and test combinations including highly complex and unique medical tests in clinical and anatomic pathology. Clients include more than half of the nation’s university teaching hospitals and children’s hospitals. ARUP is a main training site for resident rotations in clinical pathology.
INTERMOUNTAIN MEDICAL CENTER
As the flagship hospital of Intermountain Health Care, Intermountain Medical Center is the largest tertiary care hospital in the Salt Lake area, and sees the highest volume of surgical specimens. The experienced and enthusiastic faculty are closely affiliated with the University, providing upper-level residents with excellent elective training in surgical pathology, cardiac transplant pathology, and dermatopathology.
PRIMARY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL (PCH)
Located on the campus of University of Utah Health and connected to University of Utah Hospital by a land bridge, PCH is the only children’s hospital between Denver and the West Coast and serves as the clinical base for the Department of Pediatrics and pediatric subspecialists in other departments, as well as the regional referral center for pediatric medical and surgical problems, including perinatal and pediatric pathology. The pathologists based at PCH hold the ABP special qualification in Pediatric Pathology and are full-time faculty of the University of Utah. Residents receive training in pediatric anatomic and clinical pathology at PCH. Residents rotate through the autopsy service during their first year, and through surgical pathology and clinical pathology in subsequent years.
UTAH STATE MEDICAL EXAMINER
The Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office provides training in forensic pathology. Residents rotate at the ME Office for their required forensic pathology rotation where they perform forensic autopsies and are exposed to a large variety of medical/legal cases from all over the state.
