GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A summary of the general requirements for obtaining a PhD degree from the Clinical Pharmacology Graduate Program are:

  1. Obtain a grade of "B" or better in all courses and dissertation research
  2. Choose a dissertation advisor
  3. Form a Dissertation Advisory Committee at the end of the second year in the Program (or earlier) and hold bi-annual committee meetings
  4. Complete and maintain an Individual Development Plan
  5. Pass the qualifying exam
  6. Write a grant application
  7. Submit a grant application
  8. Attend and participate in the academic events of the Program, including seminars, thesis defenses, and Research-in-Progress
  9. Have at least 1 first author's primary research paper accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal (3-4 are expected)
  10. Write, successfully defend, and submit a dissertation
  11. Fulfill Graduate School requirements and NIH recommendations, such as undertaking training in research ethics and teaching assistant duties.
  12. Appeals for exceptions to any of these requirements can be made to the Associate Director of Graduate Program. If an exemption is warranted, a decision is made by the Executive Committee upon a vote.

REQUIRED COURSEWORK FOR ALL STUDENTS

The doctoral Program in Clinical Pharmacology requires a minimum of 60 credit hours. These required credit hours must be taken from four different areas:

  1. Clinical pharmacology main courses: minimum 23 credit hours required
  2. Research-in-Progress seminars, Clinical Pharmacology Special Seminars, and Clinical Pharmacology Journal Clubs: 1.5 credit hours per semester, minimum 9 credit hours required
  3. Dissertation credits: minimum 16 credit hours required
  4. Electives tailored to the individual needs of the student: 12 credit hours required

Other Clinical Pharmacology Main and Elective Courses

Other Clinical Pharmacology Main courses and electives are to be decided jointly by the student and the advisor. The specific course(s) must be approved by the student's Primary advisor and/or Advisory/Dissertation Advisory Committee.
