Global Fellowship

Dear GPHM Fellow Candidate,

We are proud to introduce the Global Pediatric Hospital Medicine (GPHM) Fellowship — a three-year track within our ACGME-accredited Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship, and the first program of its kind in the nation.

The University of Utah Department of Pediatrics has a long history in this space: we're home to the first APA-accredited global health fellowship in general pediatrics, and our faculty have built lasting partnerships with both the Indian Health Service and international collaborators over many years. GPHM was built to bring that experience together with the rigor of our PHM fellowship, for physicians who want to build an academic hospitalist career centered on domestic and international child health disparities.

GPHM fellows join the same welcoming, high-output Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine that our traditional PHM fellows call home — a division comprised of experts in medical education, advocacy, quality improvement, complex care, and global health, among many others. You won't be a fellow tucked away in a separate program; you'll be a full member of a division that has spent over a decade training PHM leaders, now extending that same mentorship and infrastructure toward global child health.

Year one is a clinical instructor year with the Indian Health Service in Chinle, Arizona. You'll provide a full year of full-spectrum pediatric care at Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility, Navajo Area IHS — building the clinical range and independence that shapes everything that follows.

Years two and three are your ACGME-accredited PHM fellowship, split evenly between two twelve-month blocks. In Utah, you'll rotate through the same sites as our traditional PHM fellows:

  • Primary Children's Hospital, Salt Lake City — a 289-bed freestanding children's hospital and the pediatric teaching hospital for the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, drawing from a catchment area spanning Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.
  • Primary Children's Hospital, Miller Family Campus — a 66-bed freestanding children's hospital in Lehi, UT, which opened in 2024.
  • Community hospital sites, giving you experience in the kind of "bread and butter" inpatient pediatrics, triage, and stabilization that define much of hospital medicine outside of tertiary centers.

The other twelve months are spent with our international site partner in Ghana, where you'll provide clinical care and lead scholarly work alongside local physicians, learners, and other healthcare stakeholders — learning to navigate the realities of practicing pediatric hospital medicine in a lower-resourced health system, not just observe them.

Scholarship is built into every year, not squeezed in around it. Every GPHM fellow completes a global health–focused scholarly project, developed with input from local collaborators at the project site and mentored by faculty across PHM, critical care, general pediatrics, and emergency medicine. A Scholarly Oversight Committee with global health experience meets with you twice yearly, and you'll have a structured quarterly touchpoint with your research mentor throughout. By the end of the fellowship, you'll graduate with a completed manuscript and a portfolio documenting your work across every field experience.

Fellows also work through a dedicated global health curriculum built specifically for this track — covering the foundations of global health and equity, practical guidance for global rotations, medical education in low-resource settings, ethics and antimicrobial stewardship, clinical skills for both domestic (including AI/AN health) and international settings, cross-border scholarly partnerships, and care for children in humanitarian crises.

By graduation, you'll be board-eligible in Pediatric Hospital Medicine, with the scholarly record and global clinical and leadership experience to step into a career of your choosing — whether that is in academic PHM or community or rural healthcare.

Is GPHM right for you?

You're eligible if you:

  • Have graduated from a U.S. pediatric residency
  • Are board certified or board eligible in general pediatrics
  • Can commit to the full three-year program

This fellowship asks a lot of you, and we want to make it possible to say yes to it. That's why we support fellows with:

  • Travel and housing assistance
  • Funding toward an advanced degree
  • Board exam fee reimbursement
  • Professional development and membership support

How to apply

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Apply through ERAS — search for the University of Utah PHM Fellowship, Global Health Program.

Our division is as enthusiastic about this fellowship as we are about the work itself — global child health, done well, done rigorously, and done in true partnership. Thank you for considering GPHM. I'd love to talk with you about it.

Warm regards,

Zac Tabb, MD, MSc GPHM Fellowship Program Director zac.tabb@hsc.utah.edu
