Psychiatry Fellowship

Training Sites

Our Addiction Psychiatry program is primarily based at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) and the VA Medical Center (VAMC), with rotations at the University of Utah Hospital.

Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI)

The Huntsman Mental Health Institute (formerly the University Neuropsychiatric Institute, or UNI) is a freestanding psychiatric hospital that draws patients from the entire Mountain West region. At HMHI, residents will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of patients, from those with addiction and severe mental illness to those with uncomplicated addiction. In contrast to the other rotation sites, residents may be more exposed at HMHI to managed care constraints and expectations, which require different skills and which may influence the resident's relationship with his/her patients.

Rotations at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute include:

  • Inpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Outpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Adolescent consultation service rotation

George E. Wahlen Salt Lake City Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC)

The George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Medical center (VAMC) is a tertiary care teaching hospital serving Utah and parts of the Mountain West. It is affiliated with the University of Utah School of Medicine. Patients at the VAMC are mostly male, and many carry a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. Residents will gain proficiency in treating addiction and its comorbidities, medical and psychiatric. Residents will learn about integrated care within the VA system and learn about numerous innovative treatment options available to veterans.

Rotations at the VA Medical Center include:

  • Inpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Outpatient addiction psychiatry rotation
  • Consultation-liaison rotation
