Non-Invasive Neurostimulation Program

The Non-Invasive Neurostimulation Program is a collaborative effort between the Department of Psychiatry and the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute (SCI). We are applying cutting-edge transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) research methods to achieve two major objectives:

  1. Precision science. Create new knowledge about how the human brain works.
  2. Personalized treatment. Develop novel, personalized, therapeutic and diagnostic approaches for neuropsychiatric diseases.

These goals will be realized by pursuing multiple activities in parallel:

  • Innovation. We are developing advanced modeling technologies to enable new TMS applications that are currently impossible. Individual-specific neuronavigation and spatiotemporally precise stimulation will allow us to test models of human brain function and develop personalized clinical interventions. 
  • Dissemination. We are creating and sharing intellectual and technical resources so that investigators at the University of Utah and beyond can apply TMS in their research.
  • Education. We aim to develop a training program in psychiatric neuromodulation to train the next generation of clinical investigators.

The facility for our program is equipped with a full TMS-EEG set-up and is located in Research Park at the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI). The facilty is also available for use by all University of Utah investigators.
