Our program does not have an affiliated internship, therefore you must arrange for an internship (PGY-1) separately from the residency program. A transitional or medicine internship is typically arranged; however, any accredited internship is acceptable.

Eligibility

  • Be a graduate of a US or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) -OR-
  • Be a graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR-
  • Be a graduate of a medical school outside of the United States who meets one or more of the following qualifications:
  • Have a valid ECFMG certificate -OR-
  • Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US Licensing jurisdiction, -OR-
  • Have graduated from a medical school outside the United States and completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by the LCME-accredited Medical School.
  • Applicants must complete a PGY-1 position in the United States before beginning residency training; any internship approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is acceptable.
  • Applicants must have passed parts I, II, and III of the USMLE prior to the time they will begin training.
  • Candidates for the program are selected based on their preparedness, ability, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities, such as integrity and motivation. The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Utah School of Medicine does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, or veteran's status.

Application

Radiation oncology residents are selected through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) for entry at PGY-2. All applications to the program should be made using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The program requires the following documentation for application:

  • ERAS Application
  • Curriculum vitae and personal statement
  • USMLE Scores, steps 1 and 2 (when available); step 3 to be performed during PGY-1 year and available at the beginning of the PGY-2 residency.
  • Dean's letter
  • Medical school transcripts
  • Three to four letters of recommendation
  • NRMP match number

MD applicants (applicants who have already graduated from medical school) must include the following items in addition to the above:

  • Letter from current program director (if applicable)
  • Notarized proof of graduation from medical school with date of graduation

International medical graduates must include the following in addition to the above:

  • Visa (J-1 only), or documentation of US citizenship
  • Valid ECFMG certificate with clinical skills assessment certification
  • Evidence of previous training in the United States (PGY-1 position)
