RMCOEH Faculty Selected to lead Utah Section of CDC Study on COVID-19 Among Emergency Response and Healthcare Personnel

Aug 25, 2020

Sarang Yoon, DO, MOH, Clinical Professor at the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, has been selected to lead the Utah section of RECOVER: Research on the Epidemiology of COVID-19 in Emergency Response and Healthcare Personnel, a CDC-funded study conducted in collaboration with Abt Associates. RECOVER will monitor a cohort of first responders (FR) and healthcare personnel (HCP) over the next year by collecting weekly self-swab COVID tests as well as blood sera samples.

Researchers will use this data to determine the frequency of infection of the virus responsible for COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, as well as COVID-19 illness among HCP and FR. Frequent testing will indicate both symptomatic and asymptomatic illness, which is critical to understand the true frequency of SARS-CoV-2 infection among this frequently exposed occupational population. It will also monitor and describe SARS-CoV-2 reinfections among HCP/FR who are seropositive to SARS-CoV-2 and/or with documented prior PCR-confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Other secondary outcomes include identifying risk factors for infection, comparing illness characteristics, monitoring antibody correlates, and more.

Congratulations to Dr. Yoon and her research team on leading Utah’s contribution to this critical research project! For more details on recruitment, the study team, protocol, and more, visit the RECOVER home page.
