Theme: Exploration

The suggested checklist for a first-year medical student is centered around a theme of self-exploration and career exploration.

Students can enter medical school with or without a very confident idea about what kind of physician they wish to become. Regardless, it is important that the first year of medical school is used to explore opportunities that can help a student learn more about themselves and what interests them. The items in this checklist will provide guidance to this exploration process.

FALL SEMESTER

• Complete Clifton Strengths Finder Assessment
  • Meet with Advisor to review Clifton Strengths results
• Complete Careers in Medicine Assessments
  • Medical Specialty Preference inventory
  • Physician Values in Practice Scale
  • Physician Skills Inventory
• Meet with Advisor to start exploring your professional questions and goals
• Meet with your RealMD Coach to start exploring your professional questions and goals
• Identify areas of interest and participate in respective activities (Elective Pathways, Student Interest Groups)
• Attend RealMD Lunch Sessions

SPRING SEMESTER

• Take Careers in Medicine Assessments a second time
  • Medical Specialty Preference Inventory
  • Physician Values in Practice Scale
  • Physician Skills Inventory
• Seek shadowing or informational interviewing opportunities in fields that interest you
• Actively participate in activities such as Student Interest Groups, Volunteering, Leadership Opportunities, or elective pathway courses.
• Begin identifying potential mentors
• Plan summer activities (professional opportunities, research, MSRP,)
