The award recognizes a graduating medical student who has demonstrated superior scholastic performance, outstanding potential as a physician, and sincere understanding of and compassion for patients under their care.

Nomination and Selection Process:

Third-year clerkship directors nominate and select the award’s recipient based on the students’ academic and professional performance, and humanistic care of patients.

History:

The Florence M. Strong Award/Scholarship is named for a woman who was an administrative assistant to six deans of the medical school over a span of 25 years. Florence retired in 1968, but many individuals in the local medical community—dating from the School of Medicine’s first four-year graduating Class of 1944—remember her fondly. This award was established by alumni to honor her contributions to the school.  The Florence M. Strong Award is presented annually to a student who has demonstrated superior scholastic performance, outstanding potential as a physician, and sincere understanding of and compassion for patients under his or her care.
