The University of Utah's Department of Surgery offers a funded 2-year Surgical Education Research Fellowship (SERF) program.

Program Goals

The University of Utah Surgical Ecucation Research Fellowship will

  • Provide fellows with knowledge and experience in the core elements of surgical education
    • Curriculum development, instructional methods, and program evaluation
    • Skills development, assessment, and mastery
    • Educational research (qualitative and quantitative)
    • Administration (residency, clerkship, simulation, etc.)
    • Faculty development
    • Interprofessional education and simulation
  • Provide fellows with an introduction to the local and national surgical education network
    • ACS/AEI consortium meetings and postgraduate courses
    • ASE/APDS Surgical Education Week
    • MHPE
  • Provide fellows with opportunities to enhance their teaching skills
    • General Surgery Intern Orientation
    • MS3 Clerkship Orientation
    • MS4 Transition to Internship Course (skills sessions)
    • Surgery Interest Group
    • Surgical Exploration and Discovery (SEAD) program
  • Provide fellows with knowledge, skills, and experiences in education research
    • IRB
    • Grant writing
    • Abstract preparation
    • Oral and poster presentation skills
    • Manuscript preparation and submission
    • Revier for Annals of Surgery Open - Education
