Introduction

One of the things that differentiate residency programs is their commitment to professional development. At the University of Utah, we have taken this to heart. Based on opportunities available in the program, in addition to resident requests, we have several different programs, in addition to traditional research, that allows an aspiring surgeon to develop their area of interest.

Over the last 20 years, our Division has grown its clinical programs and its research. Our latest task is to grow our program in education scholarship. We have recently formalized the Section for Surgical Education. One of the roles for this section is to provide opportunities for residents to develop into professional educators. Residents have the opportunity to work with one of our faculty members with advanced education degrees. This work can be in conjunction with a Surgical Education Research Foundation fellowship or a simulation fellowship. There is an opportunity to combine this work with some of the other programs offered, like Rural Surgery or Humanities. The goal is to have a one- or two-year program where, at its completion, a resident will have the foundational knowledge needed for a career in surgical education.
