Urology Sub-internship Program
This rotation is intended for fourth-year students considering a career in Urology. Students function in a sub-intern role with residents, fellows and faculty on the urology service and participate in all educational activities of the University of Utah urology program.
Students can expect to observe and participate in the management of a wide variety of adult & pediatric urological disorders in outpatient, inpatient, and operative settings. Students will be exposed to the full range of urologic subspecialties, including urologic oncology, pediatric urology, men’s health, stone disease, female and male reconstructive urology. Students will spend 1 week each at the University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital (HCH), Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH) and then 1 week of a flex rotation to work with any faculty that you might want to have more time with.
SubI’s will give a 10-minute presentation (plus 5 min for questions) at the weekly Division Grand Rounds Education Conference at the end of the rotation.
APPLICATON PROCESS
Due to high demand, the sub-internship application for visiting students is a competitive process. Medical students who would like to be considered for the University of Utah Urology sub-internship are required to submit the following Sub-I application materials:
- Letter of support from a urology faculty member (if no urologists at your medical school, please get a letter from another surgical faculty member). Please email directly to Residency Program Coordinator, Elizabeth Lignell at elizabeth.lignell@hsc.utah.edu

APPLICATION DATES
APPLICATION OPEN: January 1, 2026 through March 1, 2026.
- Notifications and selection of preferred rotation dates will be released on a rolling basis starting March 9, 2026.
- Applications received after March 1 will be reviewed and decisions based on remaining slots available.

ROTATION DATES
We are flexible about start dates, but please plan on being with us for ~4 weeks, and rotations typically start the first week of each month.
