Clinical Curriculum

Urology PGY 1

  • Urology 4-6 months
    • University
    • Primary Children’s
    • VA
    • Huntsman
  • Surgery/ICU 6-8 months (subject to change from year to year)
    • General surgery at University, LDS and VA
    • SICU
    • Burn
    • Colorectal
  • Call is variable. Daytime call is typically q2 during the week. No overnight call on Urology rotations. Surgery rotations are shifts, 24 hr in-house call, or overnight home call.

Urology PGY 2

  • University
    • Endoscopy, scrotal and penile cases. Robotic bedside assisting.
    • One day clinic per week
  • Huntsman
    • One to three days clinic per week
    • Endoscopy, small open cases, some larger open cases. Begin robotic console.
  • VA
    • Resident run service
    • OR 2 days per week. Endoscopy, scrotal and penile cases. Robotic bedside assisting, some console.
    • Clinic 3 days per week. Monday/Wednesday general urology. TRUS/biopsy Friday.
  • Rotations are broken into one to three month blocks.
  • During the week: Overnight home call q4 between all 3 hospitals. VA junior residents share q2 VA daytime call. Huntsman and University juniors share q2-3 daytime call.

Urology PGY 3

  • VA Hospital
    • Resident-run service
    • Runs OR one to two days/week
    • Clinic 3 days per week. Monday/Wednesday/Friday complex urology, men’s health, and preop clinic
    • Manage surgery schedule and preop conference.
  • Intermountain Medical Center
    • Large, non-profit community hospital system
    • Case load is high, participates in all urologic cases
    • Limited clinic requirement
    • Home call is every week night, minimal burden
    • On call two weekends per month
  • Primary Children's Hospital
    • Scrub for both major and minor cases
    • Limited clinic requirement (usually once/week)
    • Home call three times per week
  • University/Huntsman
    • Similar to PGY2 with increasing surgical capabilities including larger case involvement and robotic console participation
    • During the week: Overnight home call q4 between all 3 hospitals. VA junior residents share q2 VA daytime call. Huntsman and University juniors share q2-3 daytime call.
  • Rotations are broken into one to three month blocks.

Urology PGY 4

  • Primary Children's Medical Center
    • Similar to PGY3 year, more operative responsibility
  • Intermountain Medical Center
    • Similar to PGY3, but more operative responsibility
  • University/Huntsman
    • Chief of service. Responsible for managing inpatient services and all consults during the week.
    • Scrub major cases
  • VA Hospital
    • Substantial autonomy
    • Responsible for the inpatient service as well as running clinic
    • Two to three operative days per week.
    • Clinic one to three days per week. Procedures, complex urology, men’s health
  • Rotations are broken into two to three month blocks.

Urology PGY 5

  • University/Huntsman
    • Chief of service. Responsible for managing inpatient services and all consults during the week.
    • Scrub major cases
  • VA Hospital
    • Substantial autonomy
    • Two to three operative days/week
    • Clinic three days per week. Prostate cancer counseling, new consults, procedures, cystoscopy clinic on Fridays
    • Chief of service. Responsible for managing inpatient services and all consults during the week.
    • Organize all educational conferences
  • Rotations are broken into two to four month blocks.

Weekend call

    • All rotations except for IMC.
    • Covers: University, Huntsman, PCH, and VA
    • Home call q4-5 weekends, one senior, two juniors (one junior Friday/Saturday nights, one Sunday night)
    • Modified holiday schedule

Research

    • Productivity is resident-dependent
    • Projects may be of clinical or basic science in nature
    • Excellent support
