Supervisory Lines of Responsibility in the Care of Patients

Residents are graduate physicians involved in post graduate education. Within their level of competence they evaluate patients in the clinic, emergency room and in the participating teaching hospitals. Their findings and treatment plans are reviewed and approved by the Chief Residents and ultimately by one of the urologic faculty. Residents will also perform outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures, directly supervised by faculty members. Nighttime and weekend urologic problems will be reviewed by the Chief Resident and communicated to a faculty member - either immediately or later - based upon the judgement of the Chief Resident. Major or significant problems will be reviewed by the Urology Chairman.

At the Primary Children's Hospital, the resident works closely with the pediatric urology faculty who will supervise all of his activities. At the LDS Hospital the resident is supervised by the clinical faculty members. Overall supervision of the resident activities is carried out by the Director of Urology Education at that institution.

A monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference with faculty and residents in attendance reviews all surgical procedures, all complications at all and all mortalities at all participating hospitals. In the University of Utah Urology Training Program the Urology Chairman conducts this monthly review.

Annually and anonymously each resident reviews all urologic faculty members and reviews the training program. Specifically, suggestions for change are solicited and any grievances will be stated.

The residents' assessments of the faculty members are reviewed with faculty members individually by the Chairman. An annual meeting with faculty and Chief Residents reviews all grievances and suggestions from the residents. Appropriate action is taken.

At any time residents are free to make suggestions and state grievances. These should be made to the Chairman and will be seriously reviewed and considered.
