Academic Bio

Dr. Kalani completed undergraduate training in Chemistry and Biochemistry at UCLA, followed by his doctorate at the California Institute of Technology. After completing his Ph.D. he matriculated at Stanford University School of Medicine where he completed medical school with an emphasis in the molecular basis of medicine. His postdoctoral studies focused on the role of Wnt signaling on the cell fate decisions of neural stem cells, which was also conducted at Stanford University School of Medicine and was supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He subsequently went on to complete his clinical training, including residency and fellowship in Skull Base Surgery, Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery, at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona under the guidance of Dr. Robert Spetzler. He also completed a fellowship in neuro-oncology and endoscopic skull base surgery at the Centre for Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery in Sydney, Australia.

Dr. Kalani has published more than 150 articles and 40 book chapters in the neuroscience literature. He has edited a number of neurosurgical textbooks, including Neurovascular Surgery, Comprehensive Management of Arteriovenous Malformations of the Brain and Spine, and the Color Atlas of Brainstem Surgery.

Research Statement

Dr. Kalani is an inaugral University of Utah EDGE Scholar. Dr. Kalani’s research interests include stem cell biology, vascular biology, regenerative medicine and biomarker development for cerebrovascular disease. He is the Principal Investigator of a National Institutes of Health grant focusing on the development of blood and cerebrospinal fluid-based biomarkers for brain injury, notably after subarachnoid hemorrhage and stroke.
