Caitlin Hemlock, PhD, MS

Languages spoken: English, French, Spanish

Caitlin Hemlock is an epidemiologist and Assistant Professor in the Division of Public Health, Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Utah. She studies how water, sanitation, and domestic animals influence enteric infection and antimicrobial resistance in young children in low-resource settings. Her work uses a One Health approach to identify where children are exposed to fecal pathogens from humans and animals and how those exposures affect early growth and development. She uses community-engaged fieldwork in combination with environmental microbiology and infectious disease epidemiology to study these relationships and develop interventions that mitigate high-risk exposures.

Her ongoing research includes studies in Ecuador, Nepal, and Mozambique on enteric infection dynamics in early childhood and how they affect subsequent growth and development, how contact with and management of domestic animals and their feces in the household shape pathogen and AMR transmission across people and the environment, and how improvements to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure affect these exposures and child health outcomes.

Prior to Utah, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and earned her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley.
