Ingrid Nygaard, MD, MS (Epidemiology), is a tenured Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Utah. She no longer has a clinical practice, but instead, focuses on research related to pelvic floor disorders. Nygaard is Past-President of the American Urogynecologic Society and of the American Gynecologic and Obstetrical Society. She is the co-Editor-in-Chief for Gynecology for the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. She has served as vice-Chair of the University of Utah Institutional Review Board, and has conducted investigator-initiated NIH-sponsored research since 2000. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator for the NIH-funded Program Project, “Bridging physical and cultural determinants of postpartum pelvic floor support and symptoms following vaginal delivery”. Conducted with investigators from Maternal Fetal Medicine, Bioengineering, Exercise and Sport Science, Nursing, Family and Preventive Medicine, and Biostatistics, the aim of this project is to study the influences of intra-abdominal pressure, physical activity and strength on pelvic floor support and symptoms in women following their first vaginal birth, and to study the cultural context in which women experience those changes.

Research Statement

The primary focus of Dr. Nygaard’s research, conducted with investigators from Maternal Fetal Medicine, Bioengineering, Exercise Science and Biostatistics, is to understand how physical activity, abdominal forces, and musculoskeletal strength over the first postpartum year impacts pelvic floor health in women after their first vaginal delivery. She is also interested in the epidemiology of pelvic floor disorders.
