Research Statement

Dr. Smith interest in research crosses a variety of content areas. Her experience has been primarily in using focus groups, in-depth interviews, and survey methods. Research for her dissertation was statewide survey entitled, “A Market Segment Analysis of Adult Physical Activity: Exercise Beliefs, Attitudes, Intentions, and Behavior.” Areas of research include: the readability of informed consent documents, health literacy, evaluation of teaching nursing programs, patient satisfaction with patient education, health literacy in target populations, women’s health issues, marketing health programs, quality improvement efforts, community health needs assessment, and the use of computer technology in patient education. Dr. Smith has served as a reviewer in six study panels for NIH in the areas of health literacy.
