Julia Franklin, PhD received her education from the University of Utah, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science and a Master’s and Doctoral degree in Health Promotion and Education. Her studies have focused on disordered eating, body image, and resilience. She was a founding student member of SPEAK (Students Promoting Eating disorder Awareness and Knowledge) and served as Outreach Director for six years. During this time she organized and implemented over 80 events, including lectures, workshops, panel discussions, health fairs, and community outreach projects. She has presented at local and national conferences on topics such as the role of health educators in eating disorder prevention efforts and building positive body image through resilience. She became a Certified Health Education Specialist in 2017.
Research Statement
Dr. Summerhays has a background in resilience and resiliency, focusing on its theoretical application to the prevention of eating disorders and obesity. She is currently piloting an intervention to reduce disordered eating behaviors in female college students using the resiliency process.
