Serving as the Division Chief of Hematology-Oncology since 1987 through 1997, and then, after the two Divisions were split, as the Chief of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies since 2003, James P. Kushner, M.D. began his career at the University of Utah as an Instructor in the Division of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies, Department of Internal Medicine in 1970. He earned tenure in 1976, and was promoted to Professor of Medicine in 1983, and then to Distinguished Professor of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Kushner also holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology.

Dr. Kushner has had a long and varied career in leadership, beginning with his service as a Captain in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. When he was appointed as an Instructor in Hematology, he was also appointed as the Chief of the Section of Hematology-Oncology at the George E. Wahlen Veteran's Administration Hospital. Dr. Kushner functioned as the Director for the University of utah School of Medicine Center of Excellence in Molecular Hematology from 1994 through 2000, and then from 2005 through 2011. In addition, he has served as the Associate Program Director, General Clinical Research Center from 2006 through 2011.

By the time of Dr. Kushner's retirement in 2011, he had published over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters and review articles.
