Dr. Donald Kohan is Emeritus Professor of Internal Medicine in the University of Utah’s Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. A major focus of his basic research has been the role of endothelin in the regulation of kidney function and blood pressure in health and disease. He has translated his studies into clinical trials using endothelin receptor antagonists (ERAs) in kidney disease and hypertension. He led the first successful ERA trial in diabetic kidney disease and was on the steering committees of the RADAR and SONAR trials using an ERA in patients with diabetic nephropathy. He is currently involved in clinical trials evaluating the renoprotective effects of various ERAs in non-diabetic chronic kidney disease. Dr. Kohan has served as Chief of Medicine at the Salt Lake Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Chief of Nephrology at the University of Utah. He has chaired NIH and VA study sections, was elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, and is the recipient of the American Society of Nephrology Narins Award, the American Heart Association Donald Seldin and Distinguished Achievement Awards, the American Physiological Society Ernest Starling and Robert Berliner Awards, and the International Endothelin Council Tomoh Masaki Award.
