Born and raised in southern Alberta, Canada, Dr. Colin Van Orman attended the University of Lethbridge, Alberta for undergraduate training and then obtained his MD degree from the University of Calgary. Subsequent training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Neurology was completed at the University of Calgary and the University of Utah. After almost two years of working at Baker's Clinic in Edmonton, Alberta and over five years at the University of Calgary, he returned to the University of Utah/Primary Children's Hospital in 1992.
Although neuro-oncology was his major interest early in his career, he has since developed expertise in pediatric epilepsy and EEG. He has been involved with numerous industry-sponsored trials and one NIH-funded anti-epilepsy medication trial. Since early 2000 (after a "mini-fellowship" at Miami Children's Hospital), Dr. Van Orman has been heavily involved in the evaluation of patients for epilepsy surgery.
