Teresa (Tess) DeAtley, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Public Health, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of Utah. She is a social and behavioral scientist whose work focuses on health equity, health policy, and tobacco regulatory science. Her recent work focuses on how structural and social determinants of health shape behavior and mental health outcomes in marginalized populations, including racial and ethnic minorities as well as sexual and gender minorities.

As a mixed-methods researcher, Dr. DeAtley’s work spans the translational research spectrum, from lab-based biobehavioral studies to secondary analyses of large observational datasets such as the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, and University of Utah electronic health record (EHR) data.

She earned her PhD in Behavioral and Social Health Sciences from Brown University, her Master of Public Health and Certificate in Global Tobacco Control from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Arts, self-designed public health major, from the College of William and Mary. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, and has held research positions at internationally recognized organizations, including the World Health Organization, the Truth Initiative, and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
