Academic Information

Departments Emeritus - Physical Therapy & Athletic Training , Emeritus - Orthopaedics

Paul LaStayo, PT, PhD, CHT, is a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training, with adjunct professor appointments in several other departments. Dr. LaStayo is a member of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Dr. LaStayo's clinical interest is in utilizing "exercise as medicine" and he researches the impact of physical activity to improve function following disease, surgery and/or aging. A current focus is on cancer survivors with a special emphasis on identifying value in rehabilitation initiatives. Dr. LaStayo uses the Utah Population Database and the Utah Cancer Registry to identify participants for his research.

Research Statement

The Skeletal Muscle Exercise Research Facility (SMERF), directed by Dr LaStayo is focused on neuromuscular and rehabilitation principles designed to improve physical performance and quality of life in impaired, needy patient populations.
