Research Statement

Current areas in research and scholarship relate to increasing understanding, improving diagnosis and providing for alternative, effective and safe therapies for poorly understood and ineffectively treated disorders- specifically major depression, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue disorder as well as the long-term effects of anesthetic medications as they relate to mood. Current projects include the clinical evaluation of the antidepressant effect of isoflurane and other anesthetics for medication refractory patients, as well as complementary preclinical studies to optimize and better understand the molecular mechanisms. Additional work relates to utilizing targeted studies of white blood cell gene expression as a biomarker for depression diagnosis and severity.
