Dr. Tanner is a clinical and environmental microbiologist with training and experience in infectious disease epidemiology. Her research is primarily focused on antimicrobial resistance in natural and clinical environments and the spread of resistance factors in healthcare and community settings. She studies the transmission of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens in hospital settings and the role of the hospital environment in the spread of healthcare-associated infections. She is also interested in other waterborne pathogens such as Legionella, and the effect of disinfectants and other water quality parameters on shaping the microbiome of water systems and bacterial cross resistance between disinfectants and antibiotics. Dr. Tanner also studies the role of biofilms in the dissemination of waterborne and antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and their survival. She has a strong interest in Global Health work and many of her projects have involved field work and method development for field detection of antimicrobial-resistant organisms in the environment in low income countries.
